Tatertot Casserole
This tater tot casserole dish is a warm favorite featuring crunchy tater tots, soft ground beef, and lots of cheddar cheese! It requires only 10 minutes of preparation for an easy family dinner.
Reasons you'll adore it
If you didn't have casseroles in your childhood, this tater tot casserole will truly make you wish you had. There’s barely any preparation, it’s warm and cheesy, and tater tots provide the perfect crunch. Perhaps what I like most is how inexpensive it is to create.
Several pantry staples unite to form something enchanting!
The essence of this recipe truly originates in the Midwest. They mastered casseroles like this for budget-friendly dishes ideal for gatherings where you must nourish a large group, such as potlucks and family reunions. It's also a recipe that's suitable for kids.
Is this identical to a tater tot hotdish?
To be honest, it varies depending on whom you inquire! You'll encounter casseroles like this throughout the Midwest, particularly in Minnesota. A hotdish typically includes a starch, meat, canned or frozen vegetables, and canned soup, so this qualifies, though individual recipes can differ from family to family, which is perfectly fine.
I’m not here to debate what defines a hotdish; I’m simply here to share a truly tasty casserole with my unique twist, regardless of its name!
What you will require
Ground beef – I prefer to use a minimum of 90% lean.
Onion and garlic – our flavorful fragrant foundation. I utilized Vidalia (sweet) onion, though yellow is also suitable.
Worcestershire sauce – it provides a tasty umami flavor that's delightful and you won't want to miss.
Italian seasoning is a mixture of dried herbs available in the spice section of your grocery store in a handy jar.
Sour cream – offering a mild tang and rich creaminess
Condensed mushroom soup – it’s a reliable shortcut to unite all ingredients and enhance taste Incorporate it directly into the dish.
Corn – I opt for canned corn for ease (peaches and cream type here in Canada).
Grate your own cheddar cheese for optimal results. I really like this grater.
Tater tots – utilize a bag of your preferred brand
Is it possible to prepare it in advance?
Absolutely! I’d get everything ready up to the point of mixing in the tater tots.
Chill overnight, and incorporate them right before baking to prevent sogginess. If it’s directly from the fridge, bake for a few additional minutes.
You can prepare it in advance and freeze it for as long as three months, but I recommend adding the tater tots just before cooking.
Replacements and alterations
Cream of mushroom soup is commonly used, but you can replace it with cream of chicken or any other “cream of” soup if you like.
I've come across similar recipes that incorporate canned green beans either in place of or alongside the canned corn, so you're welcome to add or replace a can of those if you prefer.
Chopped small frozen mixed vegetables also work effectively. If you opt to use them, I suggest thawing them beforehand, and you might need to increase the baking duration.
You can replace the ground beef with ground turkey or alternatively ground pork. Alternatively, fully commit and utilize ground sausage.
Feel free to change the cheese if you want. Monterey Jack or a Tex-Mex mixture would be perfect for an alternative!
What to pair with this recipe
Tater tot casserole is frequently served with ketchup either on the side or drizzled on top.
I enjoy scattering chopped scallions on top when it comes hot from the oven.
This meal is quite indulgent, so pairing it with a side salad is always a good option. Combine mixed greens, tomatoes, and cucumber with homemade ranch dressing!
Remaining food and preservation
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Notes
Tater tot package sizes vary, so anything in the 32 oz. ballpark will work (you may use a bit less depending how you space/arrange them in your baking dish).
Some of the ingredients in this dish can be quite salty, so use low-sodium options wherever possible if sensitive to salt.
Serves 6-8 depending on how much people eat.
This casserole recipe is also on page 198 of the Salt & Lavender: Everyday Essentials cookbook.
